Captive breeding

Amphiprion_ocellaris_Rainond_SpekkingOf the over 2,000 coral fish species only about 25 can be captive bred.

Especially Anemone fishes and Sea horses can be bred. The demand for Anemone fishes is so high that half of the amount is still coming from the wild, the coral reef.

According to the UN the greatest obstacle to breeding coral fishes is the feeding of larvae and other nutritional requirements. If it is possible to rear the larvae to a juvenile stadium they need other diets, making it also so much more expensive to breed than to catch the fish in the wild.
